Dear Brother Knights,
Welcome to the October issue of Cross & Compass.
When we lived in New England, October was always one of my favorite months because of the spectacular fall colors and cooler weather. We also looked forward to dressing in costumes and collecting treats on Halloween.
Halloween also has a religious significance for the Catholic church because it marks the beginning of “All Hallowtide,” the Christian triduum covering a period of three days dedicated to remembering the dead, beginning with All Hallows’ Eve (October 31) followed by All Saints Day on November 1st and All Souls Day on November 2nd. On a more practical note – Sunday November 1st at 2:00am is Daylight Saving’s Time and we set our clocks back one-hour and “gain” an extra hour of daylight in the morning.
Columbus Day falls on Monday October 12th this year. When the Knights of Columbus were founded in 1882 by the Venerable Michael McGivney, the Knights took Christopher Columbus, recognized as a Catholic and celebrated as the discoverer of America, as our Patron.
Our annual Columbus Day Retreat will be held on Columbus Day, October 12th at Our Lady of Perpetual Health in Venice. This is a great opportunity to share our faith and grow our spirituality. The cost is $45 per person and includes a continental breakfast and a luncheon buffet.

- October 7th Wednesday, KofC Officers Meeting 9:00am-10:00am, OLL Parish Library
- October 9th Friday, Venice Eucharistic Rosary Congress Hourly 8:00am - 4:00pm, OLL Chapel
- October 12th Monday, Columbus Day Retreat 8:45am-2:45pm, Our Lady of Perpetual Health
- October 14th Wednesday, KofC General Meeting 5:30pm Rosary, 6:00pm Dinner, 6:45pm-8:00pm Meeting, OLL Parish Hall.
- October 24th & 25th Saturday/Sunday, Food Collection 40 minutes before all Masses, OLL Main Entrance
- October 25th Sunday, Harvest Picnic, 11:00am-3:00pm, OLL Front Gazebo & Fields
- October 31st Saturday, Halloween
