Chemical Abortions: The Real Battleground
By Ray Ross
Back on June 14th, John Stonestreet and Jared Hayden wrote an article in Life News entitled “Joe Biden’s Policies are Responsible for Abortion Pill Killing and Injuring Women.” This is a summary of that article.
On June 13th, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled against the Alliance Defending Freedom which had sued the Food and Drug Administration for expanding access to mifepristone – one of the two pills used in chemical abortions. The Court decided that in this case the plaintiffs had no standing.
Under both the Obama and Biden administrations access to mifepristone was steadily expanded and monitoring of the use of mifepristone to protect the health of the mother was steadily eliminated. Today both Walgreens and CVS are offering the pill.
Chemical abortions are now the most widely utilized form of abortion.
Mifepristone kills the baby by blocking the uterus from receiving progesterone. The result is the preborn child is starved to death. Starvation is not a painless process.
“For mothers, the drug can cause heavy bleeding, incomplete abortion, and infection…. According to one report, it ‘has been tied to 24 deaths and more than 4,000 adverse events or complications. Still other data has shown that ‘one in five women experienced an adverse event following a chemical abortion, and rates of complication were four times higher in chemical abortions compared to surgical abortions.’ In fact, the FDA’s own label warns that one in 25 women who take abortion drugs will end up in the emergency room.”
Chemical abortions are now the real battleground. Regulation will be enormously more difficult. Access can be provided by mail order. We’ve seen that should Harris and Walz be elected that they’re all in for abortion right up until the moment of delivery. Trump and Vance have not taken strong positions of chemical abortion, but have stated that they support Dobbs and decisions around abortion need to be left up to the states.
There is hope. The Court did not rule on the merits of the case. Plaintiffs with standing can bring a similar suit against the FDA. The fight is a long way from over. Please pray.
