Obituary for Father Vincent J. Sheehy

Father Vincent J. Sheehy, son of the late James J. Sheehy, a Chicago police officer, and Catherine
Tighe Sheehy, a registered nurse, died on June 13, 2024. Father Sheehy was born in Chicago, Illinois, on June 14, 1934, and resided there until he moved to Florida with his mother when he was 17.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, John Patrick Sheehy, and his sister, Catherine Frances Sheehy.

The funeral for Father Sheehy will be held on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Venice, Florida, with a Rosary Service from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at a later date at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery Mausoleum, Miami, in the crypt adjacent to his mother’s crypt.

Father Vince was ordained on Mother’s Day, May 14th, 1961, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Miami, by the Ordaining Bishop, Bishop Coleman Francis Carroll. He was first assigned to the Epiphany Parish of South Miami as Assistant Pastor to Father John O’Donnell. Later he was appointed to other parishes in West Hollywood and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He was also one of the priests who served as chaplain to the Miami Dolphins from 1969 to 1984.

When the Diocese of Venice was established in 1984, he became a member of the new Diocese. Bishop John J. Nevins appointed him to serve as founding pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. He supervised the building of the church, the education building and social building and all buildings on the property. He was pastor there for 21 years. He also serve as Moderator of the Pro-Life Committee of Our Lady of Lourdes and regularly attended the monthly meetings. The ProLife stand he felt was so important because there is nothing more sacred than the dignity of human life.

Father Vince was proud of his Irish heritage since both of his parents were Irish immigrants.

In lieu of flowers, mass intentions are preferred.
